There are several types of SSL Certificates to choose from. At The Turn Group, we offer 1 of each of the most commonly known types of SSL Certificates in the industry cheaper than most.

It is important to note that just because a well known name brand SSL Certificate provider offers SSL Certificates does not mean that they are necessarily better than purchasing an SSL Certificate from a less known company for a fraction of the price. Like any name brand, you more often than not pay more for the name than you do the quality. Click here to learn how SSL Certificates work at their basic functional level.

Types of SSL Certificates

There are 3 types of SSL Certificates that you can purchase. Domain Validation (DV), Organization Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV). Each has their own purpose and business use. As the need for security and trust increases in a world where privacy breeches become more common place, ways to show consumers their information is safe becomes an absolute must.

Domain Validation (DV)

The most common type of SSL Certificate in use on most websites today is the Domain SSL. This type of SSL is fully supported in all browsers but not necessarily supported on mobile and tablet devices. As the mobile and tablet industry start to dominate how we access the internet, DV SSL providers are now offering DV SSL Certificates that also support these platforms. The Domain SSL has an advantage of being issued almost immediately without any type of verification. This makes getting your website secure a snap.

What does a website with a Domain SSL look like? How do I know what SSL is being used?

The standard unsecured website starts with http:// and is accessed from your browser on port 80. The secured website uses https:// on port 443 (the letter "s" is added) to show that you have accessed a secured website. In the image below, we have accessed part of our website that is secured using the Firefox browser to show you what a Domain SSL secured website looks like.

Note: Most Domain SSL certificates when issued do not provide you with a dynamic site seal with a validation link. Instead, you will received a link to download a static site seal. Though you can and are encouraged to put your SSL Certificate providers SSL site seal on your website, it more than likely will not link back to their website validating that the website is indeed secure.

Why should you choose a Domain (DV) SSL Certificate?

Organization Validation (OV)

Organization Validation vets the company and its information before issuing the SSL Certificate. Not only does this SSL Certificate show the browser lock icon as well as changing the websites protocol to https; when you click on the browser lock icon you will see the company name/organization validated by the issuer providing even more assuring to the end user that the company is indeed legitimate.

This certificate should come with a dynamic site seal that when posted on your website and clicked, a popup window will show the validated companies information.

Extended Validation (EV)

When it comes to the top of the line SSL Certificates, you do not get much better than the Extended Validation SSL Certificate. As with the above mentioned SSL's, your website protocol is changed to https automatically. Your lock icon shows up and when clicked shows your company validated information. Your browser url bar will either turn green (depending on upon the browser you use) or your company name in green with a green lock appears. For customers who wish to showcase the highest level of authenticity and security, the ExtendedSSL is the ideal certificate.
