What is a Google Knol and what is it for?

Google has done it again with providing a dynamic content management system, aka “store house of Knol-edge” or what I like to call Googlepedia! This system is designed to showcase professional, authoritative information on any subject. The goal is to provide readers content rich material on any given topic from leaders and professionals in all industries. This new encyclopedia of articles will soon dominate leaving its competitors in the dust.

 

Who should write a Knol?

 This question can only be answered by the person attempting to do so. Yes, there will be amateur writers of all makes and sizes competing for top position within this database. The question will ultimately lie on the Knol Writers shoulders to ask themselves the following questions. Am I a leader in my industry? What information can I provide that will be of value to the readers? Has a Knol already been written about this topic? Will readers benefit from my knowledge?
Am I capable of writing this article myself or will I need a Knol Copy Editor to write it for me? All of these questions are valid and should be taken into consideration before writing commences. Remember, when searching the Knol database for information; represent the information in a way in which you yourself would like to receive it.


Why should I write a Knol?

There are several reasons to write a Google Knol. Professionals, doctors, lawyers or any profession that has knowledge for the masses, the Knol provides a way to display the information in a way never done before. Being able to do an instant search on a topic that has been written by authoritative industry leaders lends credibility to the article thus giving the end reader valuable information from trusted sources.

When a quality article is produced, that opens the doors for Webmasters to harness the ranking power of the article. If I write a paper on Website Design and Development from another source and I link to that paper from an all ready trusted source; that brings credibility to the article. The same applies in reverse. If the article that is written is a Ranked article, then it goes to show linking from that article to my website brings credibility to the website. 

Another reason I can think of to write a Knol is from a pure learning standpoint. Already fascinating articles are being written providing more knowledge to the general public thus increasing awareness.


How to write a Knol?

  • Writing a Knol Article is pretty straight forward. The first step is to sign up an account on Google Knol. Once logged in, you can start writing immediately. Here are some things to keep in mind.
  • Write your article as clear as possible using images, references, links and credits. Linking to references lends credibility to the article.
  • Use the available Head Tags when appropriate.
  • Break the article up into sections. Reading a long drawn out paper can be exhausting on the eyes. Use bullet points, bold titles and a little color to add something extra to it.

What to look out for in a Google Knol.

Like any system similar to Google Knol, careful attention will have to be paid to those practicing copyright infringement, false advertising, duplicate content and spammers looking to get you to their site. If not filtered correctly, Knol can become one large advertisement database of spammers.

Also, look at the sources of the information. Who are the writers? Do you find the article opinion based or filled with facts? I have found the some of the most credible articles to be filled with references, links, credits and contact information.  If you find an article that has been infringed upon, contact Google’s Copyright Act.


What not to do in a Google Knol.

Make sure any content that is written, provides new authoritative information on a subject and NOT to advertise a product or service. I know in the Google Knol Terms of Service it says that you can advertise but I personally feel it takes away from the point of this site. Look at is like this, an encyclopedia is an information guide to a particular topic with no agenda of advertisement or re-direction. Google Knol was designed with this in mind.

Google Knol is not to be mistaken for a traditional Blog. So writing about personal experiences and passions would not be the recommended topics. Instead, articles should be written from industry leaders, professionals and authors displaying fact based information, research and methods.

As Google states content should be objectionable and for general information purposes. You may also choose the collaboration method for your articles. My recommendation is that you only allow collaboration of your work if you trust the source. You don’t want a good article going bad.

Questionable material is something to be avoided in your Knol as well. If it’s questionable don’t post it.

If you DO NOT have properly edited and formatted Meta Tags, your site WILL suffer! 

Website copy editing utilizes very precise meta-tags in order to optimize your website's page rank. If you are not familiar with meta-tags, they are the pieces of a website's HTML code that tell a search engine about your website. The most important of these are the title tag, the description tag, and the keyword tag. The copy writer will use his or her skills with language in order to find a title that not only sounds great, since it appears on the page, but that also contains keyword rich content. The title of each page also needs to be focused very tightly, so that the reader and the browser have a good idea of what the content will be. Also as a general rule a good title will not exceed thirty characters or letters, meaning the copy writer must use great linguistic economy. Titles often times appear as search engine results; a bad title or good one can make or break potential traffic and therefore profit to and from your site.           

The description meta tag is also important for optimizing traffic to your site.  Similar to the title tag it will appear as the query result for some search engines.  The description tag is scanned along with the other content, to determine the focus and rank of your page. As with the title tag the copy writer must be able to articulate a fair amount of information about the page in a fairly limited space.           

The third meta tag, used in search engine optimization, is the keyword tag.  This tag although not as important as the others, still functions to bring precision to your site that the search engine can scan. Also the choice of keywords that will be used here should be the same as the body of the site's text. Proper word choice is paramount, since poor word choice can result in searchers not being able to find your site.  Poor visibility diminishes profitability. Consumers need to view your product or service in order to purchase it.


What in the world is Keyword Density and how does it apply to my website? 

So you're looking to optimize your site for search engines. All you have to do is modify the body text to make sure that there are enough keywords to satisfy a browser's bots, the programs that scan content. Sounds easy right? Just make sure that out of a hundred words your keyword appears only about eight times. The concept is simple but optimizing for keyword density can be a laborious task. This is because often times the number of keywords appearing in a given internet article exceeds ten. It is the copy editor's job to insure that each word appears just often enough to be picked up by the browser, but that the density is small enough so the browser does not ignore your content as spam.  

Another painstaking task is doing the research to find out which of keywords work. It is the search engine optimizer's job to do market research and find those sites showing the highest rank and best density numbers. From here one can conclude which words will work for your business, and what it is people are typing when looking for a particular product or service. The other half of this equation is just having a good sense for words and language, being able to determine what key words are highly relevant is necessary to this task.

There are several other factors that are also considered when placing keyword text or phrases in the body of your websites text. Proximity of keywords to one another as well as placement on the page impacts their significance.  For instance in this article you will see that "keyword," appears many times, and also that it appears in proximity to other words such as search engine and website. This is done intentionally in order to establish a topical connection that the search engine and reader can understand. Also you will note that this word appears not only in the headline, but also in the topic sentence of every paragraph. Placing the keyword in a prominent position relates its topical value insuring that both the search engine and human understand its significance. 

This may not be the most enthralling topic, but writing for keyword density is a valuable tool in search engine optimization. Through this type of text manipulation a website is created that not only reads smoothly, but is also highly visible through a keyword search.

Even when that content ceases to function as an actual press release it can be used on the home page, since this is high quality content.
